The Model Alliance
WE STAND WITH THEM!
We are the Model Alliance Worker Council – a collective of models and content creators joining together to make our industry safer not only for ourselves, but also for future generations.
While the fashion world appears glamorous, the working conditions often aren’t. That’s because our multi-trillion dollar global industry lacks government oversight. In New York, the center of the American fashion industry, fashion brands and the management agencies that represent us escape accountability for maintaining safe and fair work conditions. We are lightyears behind other workers in the entertainment industry when it comes to having basic rights and protections on the job.
We know what it’s like to work a job without knowing whether or when we’ll be paid; to immigrate to New York with a dream to make it big, only to end up working in an endless cycle of debt; to work in an industry that appears to celebrate diversity, only to experience discrimination on set. And to have our bodies violated and not be believed.
The rise of generative artificial intelligence in our increasingly digitized industry is top of mind for us. When used without guardrails in an industry that already lacks regulation, this technology poses a significant threat to our livelihoods. Our bodies are our business, and having our images manipulated or sold off without our knowledge or permission is a violation of our rights.
The fashion industry runs on a broken system that has gone unchecked for far too long. That’s why we came together to develop and introduce the Fashion Workers Act, a bill that will address our shared concerns and provide us with basic legal protections that most workers in other industries enjoy. Without models and content creators, there would be no fashion industry, and we simply want to be treated with the dignity and respect we deserve.
We love what we do, and we believe we can make our industry safer, fairer, and more enjoyable for everyone involved. Challenging the status quo isn’t easy, and we know we can’t do it alone. Please join our movement and help us make the Fashion Workers Act a reality in 2024.
